SAB report 18-8-1944
.
General: D
Intelligence: 9
Morse: GOOD
Mechanical: GOOD
Instructional: POOR
Remarks: An intelligent, unsophisticated honest, genuine, young man, apt to be casual at
times, not particularly well disciplined, brave, adventurous, rather irresponsible, may
easily run into danger through thoughtlessness. He has an excellent fighting spirit
but it is not easy to see how this can best be used in the field other than as a
member of a coup-de-main party. He is not mature or experienced enough to be too
self conscious to make a good instructor. He will need a very thorough course of ...
               military training.

Sgt. Hartog STS-50 28-8-1944.
This student has been in the Dutch Merchant Navy and has been in this country since October 1943. He is a good and willing worker very keen and enthusiastic and at the same time quick in the uptake. He is vert attentive during all lectures. His pistol shooting and also Stengun is quite good, considering that he had never before handled any weapons and he should shape well. He has done signalling when in the merchant Navy doing up to 6 words, but is is not very interested in this subject and prefers shooting and demolition work. He has a pleasant personality and appears very steady. He is security minded and very levelheaded. He likes his glass of beer occassionally but is very limited. He is on the quiet side but has planty of common sence.

1-9-1944.
This student continues to work well. He is interested in most of the subjects and very attentive during all lectures. He is, however, not very interested in signalling or to become a WT operator. He shows much interest and enthusiasm in demolition work. Also his map reading is quite good and he is very keen. Having served in the Merchant Navy, of course being a great asset to him. Apperently when in Holland he belonged to the Underground movement there of the Underground paper "Het Parool" and has done some very good work, amongst others he told me, that he had hidden in his house for several weeks an Australian airman who had bailed out. He seems to have plenty of pluck and does possess the qualities we need. He acted as leader on a scheme and worked quite well. His giving out of orders was rather disappointing and appeared more like a lecture instead of orders, lacking punch, but having had this fact pointed out to him, we will no doubt see better results in the future. He is like most Dutchmen not very keen on discipline and he feels his men will work better id discussing plans in a friendly manner, than by giving his orders in a military way; but time will show him this is absolutely necessary to obtain efficiency. This slight fault of his will no doubt be obviated on the next scheme.

STS-HQ to STS-51 7-9-1944.
Will attend course commencing 10-9-1944.

Sgt. Hartog STS-50 8-9-1944.
Owing to events on this continent the course for these students has been condensed. This student has not slacked off at any time during the course and has done very well. during the stay at this school. He is, however, disappointed, that he has not been able to do the complete 5 weeks course. He has shown great interest throughout the course and has mastered  each subject quickly and without much effort. Apart from the morse for which he does not care much, he has worked well and would make a good leader. He is popular with his fellow students. He would prefer it, to come back to this course and and to become absolutely perfect in his work.
